If your computer or laptop won’t boot, don’t panic, you may be able to recover your photos and documents from the bad hard drive.
There are many reasons why your microsoft computer or apple computer (imac, mac mini or macbook) won’t start up or boot. One reason is a bad hard drive. Whether it’s hardware or software related, you more than likely find yourself replacing the bad hard drive with a new one and reloading the operating system or OS.
Where do you store your data such as photos, videos, music or documents? If you’re like most computer users, you store all your data on your computer’s hard drive. If that hard drive dies, you can lose all your data!
I’ve been a computer tech for 25 years and as much as I’ve said DON’T SAVE DATA TO YOUR MAIN HARD DRIVE, people still do it! THEN when their hard drive fails for good us technicians are expected to resurrect the dead. We don’t do magic. We warned you.
You have a couple options in getting your data back from a bad hard drive. You either spend hundreds or thousand of dollars to have a clean room retrieve the data for you, or you can try a couple things on your own.
If the hard drive is truly dead, mechanical-wise (hardware) then this post will not help you much. If your hard drive is getting power but just isn’t booting up, then this post will more than likely save your data.
The idea is to power up a laptop or computer that is working and connect a usb hard drive dock to it. Here are the steps:

This is an Echo Dot (3rd Gen) Smart speaker (with Alexa) Review for those who have some form of Alexa device or are thinking of getting one. I have an Echo Dot 3rd Gen and an Amazon Echo 2nd gen and love them both.
Sound quality is the best I’ve heard on a speaker of this size!!! Definitely worth paying a little extra for this Echo Dot over the 2nd generation model. I’m not going to discuss the functionality of what Alexa has to offer as there’s tons of info already out there. For starters though, you can turn your lights on, tv on, control the volume of tv, play music, reorder products from Amazon, just by talking to Alexa. Simply say, “Alexa, order more dog food,” and Alexa places the Amazon order for you.
I’ve been a happy owner of an Amazon Echo 2nd generation and three 3rd generation Echo Dots for a year now, and love them. I’ll add some thoughts about how to choose which Echo device may be best for you. My main use is streaming music on both, either from Amazon’s music streaming (The Echo products have built in bluetooth and wifi card for talking to the internet) or via bluetooth to my iPhone. I used to use headphones to my iPhone while working out in the basement but that was a hassle. I also got sick of the smaller sound from the iPhone when working on projects while in the basement. This is what prompted the purchase of the Echo Dot…now I stream from my iPhone to the Echo Dot via bluetooth.
The most obvious update to the Echo Dot 3rd generation is the new look: it’s as if someone took a 2nd generation Dot, inflated it with an air pump, and wrapped the edge in fabric. And it’s not bad!
What’s different/updated in the 3rd Generation Dot:
1) It is slightly larger than the 2nd generation device, measuring 3.9″ wide x 1.7″ tall (2nd gen was 3.3″ wide x 1.3″ tall), and the top and bottom edges are more rounded. It is also substantially heavier at nearly twice the weight of the 2nd generation model.
2) The 2nd generation Dot came in two color options (black and white), each of which had a shiny plastic exterior that I personally thought looked a little cheap. The 3rd generation Dot has a fabric exterior which gives it a classier appearance, and it’s available in three colors: heather grey, sandstone, and charcoal. The fabric and rounded edges give the 3rd generation Dot a much softer look than its predecessor.
4) The 3rd generation Dot has a larger speaker (1.6″, versus 1.1″ on the 2nd gen), which is paired with a larger driver as well. I’ll talk below about the effect this has on audio quality.
5) The placement of the microphones is slightly different: while the 2nd generation had seven small far-field microphones on its top surface; the 3rd generation has four large microphones.
The Echo Dot has the BEST speaker I’ve ever heard for under $50. The functions of the echo along with the music playing functionality and the sound quality makes it a steal at this price point. It can get pretty loud, while keeping the nice punchy bass. If you like deeper bass you can feel, I recommend the Amazon Echo.
If your primary motivation for a speaker is to listen to music, go with the echo. If your budget is under $50 then go with the dot. The dot will only flourish is an enclosed space. It needs walls nearby to bounce off to add to the bass response.
I’d recommend this Echo Dot for someone who needs an echo for their kitchen, bedroom or bathroom. I use mine in the workout area of the basement, while the Amazon Echo stays in the kitchen.
If you’re looking for a great-sounding Alexa unit that streams music, takes commands from Alexa, looks great and is needed for an average room, I recommend the Echo Dot.
If you’re looking for a larger, full-sound you want to crank up, I recommend the Amazon Echo. I have both the Echo and Dot and love them each for what they do.

Red exclamation when importing video from SD card to iPad pro RESOLVED!
I get a Red exclamation (!) when importing video from SD card to iPad pro. I have 3 YouTube channels and have been editing video mostly on my iPad pro using Lumafusion and love it! I have been a video and audio editor for over 25 years. The mobility of the iPad pro is awesome!
I film most of my YouTube videos with my iPhone and iPad pro, sharing files between the two, for easy editing in Lumafusion.
As always, the import screen came up, showing what photos and videos are available to import to the iPad from the SD card. I SAW ALL FILES IN THUMBNAIL FORM!
After a couple minutes, the video thumbnails were greeted with the RED EXCLAMATION POINT.
The videos were not importing!
Reading forums and complaints from many video editors turned up no answers. Some people said it’s the file size, while others said it’s the file name. Other people said you need a special SD card reader. None of these are true.
I was fearing it was a 4k thing, since I was able to import 1080 60p just fine. Would I be able to edit 4k video in different resolutions on my iPad?! YES! READ ON!
The issue is the 10 bit video files I filmed. Apple IOS CANNOT HANDLE 10 BIT VIDEO FILES at the time of this writing. You are limited to 8 bit video files.
In your camera settings, choose a video setting that is 8 bit if you want to import video into your iPad pro.
IOS will only import 8 bit video files, not 10 bit.
Luckily, there are many settings in 8 bit to choose from in most camera settings. Is there a difference between 8 bit and 10 bit and are you losing much? It’s nothing you have to worry about unless you want to insanely zoom in on video. For that you will be better off filming with a 10 bit setting and editing on your iMac, Macbook, anything but IOS.
10 bit isn’t too much different than the 8 bit.
I was able to edit the 10 bit 4k 60p video in Final Cut Pro X on my iMac with no issues. Moving forward, I will need to choose an 8 bit video setting if I want to edit video on my iPad. No big deal at all.
I ran a dozen tests filming with different settings and they all pointed to the bit rate. 8 bit video could be imported into the iPad for editing but 10 bit would never show up…just fail. This was regardless of the file size.

There are 2 speeds on the Dyson V8 vacuum, which is standard and high power. I always vacuum carpet on high power, as it gets up all the dust and dog hair on that setting. We have a German Shepherd (GSD.)
With the high setting, the Dyson V8 Absolute lasts about 10 minutes. I was able to vacuum the living room and dining room on a full charge.
After a year, I noticed the Dyson battery lasted about 2 minutes or less on a full charge. The Dyson battery was losing its charge.
The Dyson V8 has a 2500 mAh battery, while the 3rd party battery has a 3800 mAh, which means it lasts longer!
How long does the new Dyson battery last? I was able to vacuum the entire house, including the 2nd floor, minus one of the bedrooms, on one charge using the highest power setting. This includes all rooms, kitchen, bathrooms, hallways, etc. I LOVE THIS BATTERY and highly recommend it!
The Dyson V8 replacement battery is easy to install, comes with a small screwdriver, 3 screws and 2 replacement air filters for your Dyson vacuum. I used the same screws already in my Dyson V8 Absolute vacuum and had no issues. Total installation took about 5 minutes. You will need to remove the dirt catch container from the vacuum to replace the battery, which is easy to do. If you have any questions, ask.
This battery is much less expensive and lasts much longer than the battery Dyson vacuums come with.
On a side note, we have always had great vacuums for the house, even by the big name brands. Vacuums had to be replaced every couple years.
I always thought of trying the Dyson vacuums but never wanted to spend that kind of money. I was already spending about $200 every 2 years roughly on a vacuum, so why not spend $150 more and see if Dyson is up to the hype. After thinking about it for weeks I took the plunge and will not ever own anything but a Dyson again. I’m not getting paid to say this.
I will never have anything other than a Dyson! I can’t believe the amount of dirt and hair collected by these powerful vacuums! Dyson is by far the best vacuum brand I have ever used and will never use anything else. They’re made incredibly well and completely blow away the competition. If you get one of these vacuums, you’ll see what I mean when emptying the container. Each vacuum session, every few days, results in a solid dust bunny the size of a softball, filled with mass hair and dirt.
A phone charger is a plug that goes right into your phone or ipad. This is a plug that goes right in you do not need to do any special things to the charger or the phone to make this charger work to charge your device. You can purchase many 3rd party chargers for various phones and tablets at the fraction of the cost of one by say, Apple. You should carry this charger at all times because your phone might die from not having any battery left if you do not charge it.
This charger just plugs right into an outlet, power strip. The max percentage that is aloud to charge on your phone or ipad and even a computer is 100% of power to go into your device that you have. This device that you have is your responsibility to charge.
It’s best to let your device discharge to 0% to the point it turns off, then charge to 100% without ever removing it from the outlet. This will help guarantee a longer battery life. I do this once a month.
Buy an extra charger or two or three. I keep one at home, one next to the bed, one in the car and one at work. If it is dead you are going to be saying “dang it.”

How to buy an apple computer for a lower price. If you’re looking for a mac, there are a few ways you can get them cheaper without going to craigslist for someone’s used Apple computer.
Yes, Apple computers, or macs, are expensive. Apple computers are expensive for a reason. THEY WORK! I’m a tech geek and have tinkered on pc’s, having built my own computers for about 25 years. I never thought I would buy a mac but after the headaches with windows and all their issues, I gave up. I have used Apple computers and products in my studio since 2009 and will never go back to pc. Apple products just work, which allows me to focus on my work and art.
Someone once told me if you can get passed the initial sticker shock of how expensive Apple computers are, you will be fine, and you will never look back. They were right.
I’m a video editor and audio engineer. My macs cut through 4k video like butter. PC’s always stalled out, had software issues and began to lag over time. Microsoft charges for operating system updates that are buggy. Apple software updates, including the full operating system updates, are always free from the App store.
One huge thing to mention is that all Apple products are designed and built under one roof, unlike Microsoft. There are multiple pc vendors designing their own products in hopes they will work with windows.
Another reason Apple is superior to pc is the operating system. Windows utilizes a registry, which is easily corrupted, while Apple’s operating system is Unix – based…a MUCH BETTER operating system that is faster and cleaner.
So if you’re in the market for a mac, I can assure you that you will enjoy it, having much less headaches than you would with a pc. I’m not an apple fan boy by any means; I simply love their products and THEY JUST WORK!
You’ll always find the highest price at the Apple store or best buy, with some exceptions online at the Apple store. Apple products maintain their value from release date to the day discontinued, unlike a pc or used car.
Students, teachers, and education staff can save up to $200 on Macs by purchasing through the Apple Education Store. With these price reductions, buying through Apple can be a good deal, even though you will pay sales tax. Ground shipping is always free with a Mac purchase (from any of the Apple Stores). The best time for a student to purchase is in the summer months, when Apple usually runs a back-to-school promotion. For a few years now, Apple’s been offering students a $100 Apple Store Gift Card with the purchase of a Mac, and a $50 Apple Store Gift Card with the purchase of a qualifying iPad or iPhone.
The Apple-Certified Refurbished Mac Department is the other big way to buy from Apple and save. Getting a great deal on a refurb can have a lot to do with timing. Apple refurbs are current or previous generation models that have been tested, refurbished, and re-certified but most of these apple computers and devices are brand new, never used. Anything from ipads to iphones, imac computers and macbooks are available on the refurbished section of the Apple store. They carry the same one-year, extendable warranty as regular Macs. These purchases also often qualify for printer rebates, and students can purchase refurbs through the education store to get the gift card. Don’t let the word REFURBISHED scare you. All products are sealed and new, with the buyer unable to tell if they’re off the shelf in the store or not. I purchased my imac, ipad and even an iphone this way, saving roughly 30% on each! Inventory changes almost daily with so many people purchasing from this section of Apple.
Apple’s Black Friday
This is the exception to the rule. The one time of year you can find variations in pricing at the Apple Store is on Black Friday. Sadly, these sales usually consist of the same 5 percent off deals year after year, so if you’re looking to score a good deal on a Mac on Black Friday, we recommend shopping anywhere but the Apple Store. Resist the siren’s call of the Apple Store’s shining halls and come to us for the best online deals.
I hope this helps you in making a purchase and where to get said purchase. If you have any questions, let me know! Thanks for reading!

Call of duty black ops 4 review. Call of duty black ops 4 is a battle royale game for PS4,Xbox and Pc with a 100 players to play against on those platforms. My favorite place to go in call of duty black ops 4 is nuke town is because of the zombies. I like the zombies because they look cool, better than previous call of duty black ops versions. The graphics and sounds of gameplay are great.
My favorite vehicle to use is the truck because you can carry tons of people in it. What I like about call of duty black ops 4 is the realistic graphics. Fortnite battle royale looks great, but has more of a cartoony look, which is cool. Fortnite does not have trucks in the game to carry your squad, unlike call of duty black ops 4.
Apex is the new battle royale game like Fortnite, and call of duty black ops 4. I think Apex copied call of duty black ops 4 because the weapons look futuristic just like the weapons in Apex. I bought call of duty black ops 4 with a PS4 card via Sony’s playstation store. Here is where you can get Playstation cards.
What are V-bucks in Fortnite Battle Royale used for in PS4 and Xbox? You may have heard about v-bucks in Fortnite gaming from Epic games but aren’t sure what they are.
Fortnite is a free game to play. Fortnite has cool skins gliders wraps for guns and more. My favorite place to land in Fortnite is sunny steps because sunny steps has cool temples. The battle pass is a free way of getting rewards for doing your challenges and leveling up your character.
If you want to get the battle pass or skins (different costumes or accessories for your Fortnite character) you have to get v-bucks. V-bucks are money that is used in Fortnite’s shop, which is accessible via PS4 and Xbox gamestore within the Fortnite game.
V-bucks is Fortnite currency. Instead of using PS4 or XBOX gift cards to buy items in the Fortnite store, you purchase PS4 or XBOX gift cards to buy Fortnite V-bucks then use the V-bucks to purchase items in the Fortnite store online via the Fortnite game.
You can get v-bucks in the battle pass as well as buying them with real money. There are four different types of packages of v-bucks 1,000 2,800 5,000 and 13,500 v-bucks in diffrent types of packages, how I usually get v-bucks is I use PS4 cards I play on PS4.
While both games have been successful for Epic Games, Fortnite Battle Royale became a resounding success, drawing in more than 125 million players in less than a year, and earning hundreds of millions of dollars per month, and since has been a cultural phenomenon.
It is a fun game and takes awhile to become good. At the time of this writing, my kids are 6 and 10. I am unable to beat them…I don’t even come close. All players from around the world (100 players average) start out in a plane. You choose where you drop out over the map. Each player starts with no weapons or health or building materials. The object is to drop and find weapons, health packs and building materials as fast as possible. Each player tries to survive, becoming the last one standing. There are building, mountains, homes, rivers, bridges, and all kinds of things in FORTNITE. You chop down trees and destroy home with your pick axe to get materials to rapidly build wall, bridges and roofs for shelter against enemy gunfire.
The graphics for fortnite are amazing and cartoon-like. Known players such as NINJA (in his early 20’s) easily average $500,000 a month or more by playing this game on the live streaming site TWITCH.
Fortnite began from an internal game jam at Epic Games following the publishing of Gears of War 3 around 2011. Though it was not initially one of the developed titles during the jam, the concept of merging the construction game genre, representing games like Minecraft and Terraria, and shooter games arose, leading to the foundation of Fortnite. Development of Fortnite slowed due to several issues, including switching from the Unreal Engine 3 to Unreal 4, a deeper role-playing game approach to extend the life of the game, and a switch of art style from a dark theme to a more cartoonish style. Further, Epic was looking to get into the games as a service model, and brought in Chinese publisher Tencent to help; Tencent took a large stake in Epic as part of this, leading to the departure of several executives, including Cliff Bleszinski, who had been a key part of Fortnite‘s development. Fortnite‘s approach was changed to be Epic’s testbed for games as a service, and further slowed the development.
Near the same time that Epic released Fortnite into early access, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds had become a worldwide phenomenon, having sold over 5 million copies three months from its March 2017 release, and drawing strong interest in the battle royale genre. Epic recognized that with the Fortnite base game, they could also do a battle royale mode, and rapidly developed their own version atop Fortnite in about two months. By September 2017, Epic was ready to release this as a second mode from “Save the World” in the paid-for earlier access, but then later decided to release it as a free game, Fortnite Battle Royale, supported with microtransactions. This version quickly gained players, with over 10 million players during its first two weeks of release, and leading Epic to create separate teams to continue the Fortnite Battle Royale development apart from the “Save the World” mode, outside of common engine elements and art assets. This allowed Fortnite Battle Royale to expand to other platforms otherwise not supported by the “Save the World” mode, including iOS and Android mobile devices and the Nintendo Switch.
With both modes of Fortnite still considered to be early access, journalists have yet to provide comprehensive reviews of either mode.
The Save the World mode achieved over one million players by August 2017, just prior to the release of Battle Royale.
Fortnite Battle Royale, on the other hand, became a significant financial success for Epic Games, leading them to separate the teams between Save the World and Battle Royale to provide better support for both modes. Within two weeks of release, over 10 million players had played the mode, and by June 2018, just after the Nintendo Switch release, had reached 125 million players. Revenue from Fortnite Battle Royale during the first half of 2018 had been estimated in the hundreds of millions of dollars per month.
Fortnite Battle Royale has also become a cultural online phenomenon, with several celebrities reporting they play the game, and athletes using Fortniteemotes as victory celebrations. A notable streaming event in March 2018, with streamer Ninja playing Fortnite Battle Royale alongside Drake, Travis Scott, Kim DotCom, and Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster, broke viewership records for Twitch to date, and led to Epic arranging a Fortnite Battle Royalepro–am with 50 pairs of streamers and professional players matched with celebrities at the Electronic Entertainment Expo 2018 in June 2018. Epic Games is working to develop organized eSports competitions around Fortnite: Battle Royale, including a Fortnite World Cup tournament in 2019.
There has also been growing concern over Fortnite Battle Royale‘s draw toward young children, emphasized with the release of the mobile client. Parents and teachers had expressed concern that students are being distracted and drawn away from school work due to playing Fortnite. Concerns have also been raised about the impact that playing a game involving repeated gun violence may have on young children.
The Cozmo robot made by Anki is a smart AI robot and has emotions. Cozmo is an excellent teacher and game player complete with emotions for kids ages 5 to adult. Cozmo isn’t another robot toy, as you may know, as he moves, talks, has facial expressions and a lot of constant cute body language that brings him to life.
My kids love technology and robots, so Cozmo seemed to be the perfect addition to our home and I was right. This little droid is worth ever penny to the point where I will be getting one for myself…I’m their dad.
My sons are 6 and 10 and spent more than half the day talking to and playing with Cozmo. Not only does Cozmo have easy to understand games, he teaches via fun.
This little robot just won’t sit there when not in use either. When put in explore mode, or even waiting between games, he has a personality all his own. He will chirp and talk, move around and jostle his little robot body. He will explore and get your attention when he needs something.
Cozmo is smart enough to not fall off the end of a table when moving and even makes little R2D2 type sounds when panicked and moving in reverse. He truly has a personality and learns more and more as you interact with him.
The company who made Cozmo, Anzi, has members of Pixar and Dreamworks working on him, which gives you an idea of where his cute personality and traits come from.
Cozmo also has face recognition software. Not only can he recognize you, but will say your name and the correct name of anyone else playing with him.
There are a lot of games packed into the software, with more available all the time, providing hours of enjoyment to your kids, and many adults.
Cozmo comes with 3 light cubes for games and learning, his charging dock station, instructions and usb charging cable. He is controlled by the free software from the app store so you will need a phone or ipad to use him. Cozmo does roam and talk and act on his own but the app is needed to upload games and work with him. He connects to his own Cozmo secured wifi network to your device and will not ever connect out to the internet. Setup is very easy and fun right out of the box.
I highly recommend getting this little Cozmo robot droid. I may even get one for myself, he is so cool. People at work will get a kick out of him. He’s not just a toy, he’s an actual learning little AI machine.
This post is for those looking at either the iPad pro 10.5 inch or 12.9 inch model. More than likely you already know the specs of both ipad pro models and are just looking for advice on which one to buy, based on size. Specs for each can be found for each at the bottom of this post.
For a lot of my YouTube video production I will film and edit on my iPhone using iMovie. For more advanced edits for clients or green screen work I will edit on my 2011 iMac 27″ i7 using final cut X.
As I started working on a few more YouTube channels, mobility was more important to me. I needed and wanted something more than the size of an iPhone screen.
Research shows that more people are using iPads for editing photos and video now more than ever. Since I really only use the Macbook pro for researching online and YouTube watching, it seemed to me I could get more done faster and easier with an iPad pro model. I WAS RIGHT.
The technology in an iPad pro is much faster in every way, even when going against my 2011 27″ iMac with 32GB ram for rendering and exporting movies, by at least 50%.
WHAT iPad PRO DID I GO WITH?
After long debate and many customer reviews later, I went with the 10.5″ iPad. Unfortunately I will not be able to help you with this. You should really check them out if you are unsure. I was almost going to order the 12.9″ since I will be using it for art and video editing most of the time. The larger the screen, the better, I thought.
Wanting to save some money, and seeing that most people were very happy with their 10.5″ ipad pro screen size, that is the route I took. I am very happy with it.
As you research, you will find that half the users love the screen size of the 12.9″ for what they do, while others really find the 10.5″ to be perfect. I find the 10.5″ to be perfect for me and I have used laptops and pc’s and iMacs of all shapes and sizes over the last 25 years.
for editing video I use LumaFusion and couldn’t be happier. It works just great on the ipad pro 10.5″ and has sped up my editing process tremendously.
If you are on the fence on whether or not to get an iPad pro I would say YES! These iPads are so much better than what you may have been used to just a couple of years ago with iPads. I can’t recommend them enough.
Now my workflow for most YouTube channels is to film with my iPhone and edit on my iPad pro 10.5″ Once editing is done I upload right to YouTube from the iPad pro.
If you have any questions or have chosen one over the other, let us know why.

In this post I will include the unboxing and review of the oculus go vr headset. I finally bought the oculus go and LOVE IT! There are 2 versions. oculus go as a 32GB and a 64GB. The 32GB is only $199 and the 64GB is $249.
$50 more was worth doubling the hard drive size for loading apps, videos and pictures. I wasn’t looking for a VR headset until a friend brought his oculus go to work. I love this VR headset by oculus!
What is a virtual headset? The best way to explain it would be to imagine a cool 3D scene from a movie you recently saw. Now, with that, you are also able to turn your head and have a look around the entire scene. In front of you, behind you, above you and even the ground beneath your feet. It’s purely 3D all around you. A full 360 above, below and all around you.
Putting the oculus go headset on for the first time, I was greeted with the main menu, which floats before you. The background was a customized high-end apartment, which is viewed at 360 by turning your head or rotating. It’s amazing! It’s truly another world. I ordered the oculus go the same week.
This is the first VR / 3D 360 video I saw, which blew me away. The video is of Magga Braco, professional dancer and choreographer. I follow her on YouTube and it was cool to see her in 3D. With the oculus go VR it’s like she’s there.Of course you won’t see her in 3D in this video…you need to view it via the oculus go for that…but it’s still a great video.
You can get this video by downloading for free right to your oculus go headset from the oculus store, all right within the headset after you connect to wi-fi during setup.
Magga’s videos are just some of the free videos available on the oculus go menu.
One of my favorite apps for the oculus go VR is the dinosaur clip of about 8 minutes in length where you follow “Blue”, the velociraptor from Jurassic park. This clip is amazing and features a T Rex as well. The 3D immersion and sound from the built-in speakers is very good. Using headphones, it’s even better, as with any device.
OCULUS GO SETUP
Setting up the oculus go is very easy and requires no complex tech background. Inside the box comes an index card that says DOWNLOAD THE OCULUS APP from the app store. Once this app is on your iPhone or iPad, you enter basic information and it talks to your oculus go, setting it up. You only need to use this app once. The oculus go does not require a phone to operate, it is purely a standalone item. I had mine up and running in less than 5 minutes.
What does the oculus go come with?
You get the oculus go, the remote, usb charger cable and cleaning cloth and small manual. You also get a soft rubber insert spacer if you want to use the oculus go with prescription glasses. Speaking of prescription glasses, you can also order prescription lenses for the device via their website.
The oculus go is very comfortable. After wearing it for about an hour it was just as comfortable as was when I first put it on. The straps are adjustable and made of soft cloth / nylon. The face plate which rests on your forehead and cheekbones is a very soft plush fabric.
This is rechargeable with the standard rechargeable usb cable. The headset lasts about 2.5 hours on a full charge and warns you when running low on power. oculus does not recommend using the headset while plugged in but many have done it, including me, with no issues. I guess that’s a disclaimer in case something happens they can say, well, we told you not to use it while charging!
There are a few options out there when it comes to VR headsets. Two of the others I looked at are the oculus rift and vr headset for the PS4. Being a PS4 gamer, it would be very cool to game in 3D vr. I decided to go with the oculus rift for price, portability (no wires required to use it unlike the PS4 and I liked what I saw on the oculus go.)
I’m sure I will get the PS4 VR headset but for now I wanted to toy around with this oculus rift. It’s a cool toy and learning tool. National Geographic has a channel with VR content, along with other informative channels. One of my favorites is the travel app where they show video clips and photos in 360 VR while narration plays. Last night I took a tour of Rome and learned some of the history behind the coliseums there. I felt like I was sitting just outside, because, well, I was, in a way. I loved it.
What other things can you do with it?
There are meeting rooms where you can join others with the oculus go and have conversations, watch movies together in a virtual movie theater and just hang out. You can watch concerts together in 3D VR and many other cool things.
I created a virtual apartment and customized some walls with actual photos I took. I don’t plan on using this feature much but it’s cool knowing that you can meet others and host in a virtual world. Watching a movie with my brother or friend while they are at their house sounds pretty cool. OR, you can hold a meeting with others. Each person in the meeting room will appear as a virtual animated character, which you customize.
Speaking of watching movies and videos, there is a built-in browser. I’ve already watched YouTube and HULU and the experience is that of sitting in front of a big screen in a movie theater. A lot of people like to watching movies or videos in bed.
One thing you can’t do is walk around and have it track your steps. There is no outside source of tech watching you walk, as with the PS4. That’s not a big deal to me. I would rather be cable-free and not walk into furniture anyway.
Lightweight Headset — designed with innovative, breathable fabrics and injection foam molding developed for professional athletes
Next-generation Oculus Lenses — offering a wide field of view with significantly reduced glare
Integrated Spatial Audio — speakers built into the headset, transporting you straight into VR and making the headset easy to share with someone else
Standalone VR — no additional devices required while in VR (Oculus Go requires the Oculus Companion App, downloadable from the iOS and Android store on a smartphone).
So if you have $199, you can immerse yourself in virtual reality. It is an amazing piece of tech and each time I wear the headset, I’m just in awe. It’s one of the best things I have bought in a while. There are many free apps for download along with apps to purchase, which are the same price roughly as in the app store.
Final thoughts. Yes I highly recommend it and would buy this again. The price tag is not bad at all compared to other tech out there, which is surprising.

This Retro 3D Gameboy Soft Silicone iPhone game case cover for Apple iPhone is one of the coolest iphone accessories I have seen in a long time. Not only does the cover look cool and fit your iPhone perfectly, but the games function as well! The cover protects the back of your phone.
I’m an 80s kid and just ordered one. This is a great gift for anyone with an iPhone, born in the 1970s or 1980s. Father’s day is coming up so I ordered one for my brother as well.
The case is made very well, has a few color choices and comes with an extra battery. The games are from the classic Gameboy era and even have sound.
Although we have awesome games and apps at our fingertips, I’m always happy to see retro games turn up, as I’m a huge fan. Our generation saw the beginning of arcade games with pacman, donkey kong, jungle hunt, galaga, galaxian, etc. etc. I remember playing pong as a 5-year-old in our house when it was first introduced. My dad connected the console to a 9″ black and white tv. Ah the good old days.
Most people watch gamers on YouTube or the popular live streaming site Twitch.
I have PS3 and moved on to PS4 because I wanted to play Star Wars battlefront. I grew up on the original Star Wars films and saw ep4 A New Hope in theaters as a kid. I’ve seen many versions of Star Wars video games through the years and the Battlefront franchise from EA games was truly the one we’ve been waiting for.
Typical with online gaming, you have a PS4 user account which is used to join games online. This user account is called your gamer tag and also acts as your Sony Playstation account name. For this reason, one player can play online at a time against others, per console.
I wanted a 2nd PS4 since the kids have filled the first PS4 up with their games and storage data. I needed a 2nd one for myself since I game and broadcast to twitch and YouTube. Also, and most important, it will be fun to game alongside them online, which I will need a 2nd account for, as well as a 2nd playstation.
Either I’m the coolest dad (well actually I am) or an idiot (probably this as well) for buying a 2nd playstation. I have to say it was a very good idea. My sons can play on the first PS4 upstairs and I play from a 2nd account downstairs.
Playing with your kids in an online battle against others and zombies and bad guys is great. It’s a lot of fun. Imagine storming a castle or a battlefield with your kids, shouting orders to one another such as “THEY’RE ON YOUR LEFT” or “COVER ME I’M GOING IN!” We can also fly a mission against the Empire over the surface of the death star together.
Having a 2nd PS4 was certainly not in the budget but it opens doors to another world of gameplay with my kids. Who knows, maybe I’ll make a little cash during YouTube or Twitch gameplay while streaming.
I use the skullcandy hesh 3 headphones for gameplay. They have a built in microphone for chatting with friends during gameplay and are very comfortable.

Skullcandy hesh 3 wireless headphones are perfect in every way without breaking the bank. I’ve tried many headphones and these are the best wireless headphones. I’m a bit of an audiophile, being an audio engineer for 25 years. I’m always listening to music, especially during my 4 hour daily commute to work via train. The best headphones I found can be had for under $100. I spent a lot of time researching reviews, watching videos and trying headphones out. I decided on the skullcandy hesh 3 over the ear headphones.
You’ll see a lot of people wearing the BEATS over the ear headphones. I’m not THAT picky but I know what I want. Having been a musician, audio engineer and lover of music for over 25 years, I need my audio as perfect as I can get. The Beats headphones were too bassy, too fake, too muddy. Mixes should be close to flatline with punchy deep bass and shimmering highs, without piercing your ears. Great headphones don’t add mud or frequencies that shouldn’t be there. Beats headphones are pricier and feel like someone put “pillows” over the speakers.
I listen to all styles of music from hardcore metal to classical and pop rock to movie scores. When editing audio, it’s best to have a pair of headphones with a flat response, meaning, they will sound as close to the original music as possible. My favorite headphones in the studio are Sennheiser, hands down. Nothing beats them in my opinion and I have used many.
For enjoying music, there’s nothing wrong with getting a pair of earbuds or over the ear headphones that add a little color to the audio mix. Too much color will muddy the sound and fatigues the ear while listening.
My skullycandy hesh 3 headphones review from my Rotter studios YouTube channel:
My biggest gripe in headphones and ear buds is the muffle factor. I can’t stand muffled audio, as if there’s a pillow over the speakers. Beats headphones are really good and popular, but, again, for me, not the type of bass I need in my music.
Ear buds are great if you find the right ones. The most comfortable and best-sounding ear buds I have used are the ones that come with your apple iPhone, believe it or not. I was very surprised at how powerful and clear the included earbuds with my iphone7 made the music sound. Although I love earbuds, I looked at changing to “over the ear headphones” for comfort reasons and I wanted cordless. The ear bud cord pulling on my jacket was annoying. I don’t like being tied to things and a falling out ear bud just ticks me off.
A friend has a pair of the skullcandy hesh 2. He’s a big skullcandy fan. I was impressed with the full spectrum of EQ that wasn’t muddy or ear-piercing. The sound was balanced well and the bass was punchy and tight. These headphones inspired me to research skullycandy, their various over the ear models, and a couple other name brands. There are a lot of great brands out there for under $100 or way more than $100. For the purposes and length of this article, I will focus on the skullycandy hesh 2 and skullcandy hesh3 and why I chose the hesh 3.
Two other skullcandy headphones I looked at are The hesh 3 and the crusher. The hesh 3 difference is longer battery life compared with the hesh 2’s (although I’d be fine with the 15 hours battery life of the hesh 2’s.) The hesh 3 is a bit more at $98 and the crusher headphones are $179. I knew $179 was out and even the $98 was more than I wanted to spend…but for $30 more, it’s not that much.
After reading about the differences between the hesh 2 and hesh 3, I decided to go with the skullcandy hesh 3. The reasons?
The hesh 3 headphones cover your entire ear and have memory foam type material for an even more comfortable fit. Comfort is very important and, these skullcandy hesh 3 headphones are that and more. Wearing these headphones just feels perfect. After 4 hours, they’re just as comfortable as they were when I put them on. Like soft firm pillows perfectly fit to over your ears. They don’t look large on your head and they sound great.
Some reviews said the skullcandy hesh 3 headphones had a more flat-lined EQ and fuller sound than the hesh 2’s. They are right. I already knew what the skullcandy hesh 2’s sounded like and I loved them, so I figured, it’ll be icing on the cake to have better sound than what I already heard.
The hesh 3 headphones sound GREAT! I listen to all forms of music and they do well with each. The stereo spacing is just right with the sound quality being full and punchy. I really love these skullcandy hesh 3 headphones and can’t recommend them enough. I bought a 2nd pair for my wife for when she takes walks.
I use the hesh 3’s while editing video on my macbook, listening to music to and from work and at work when I need to concentrate. These are a must – have if you want a comfortable great-sounding pair of headphones. They also come with a charging cord and audio cable in case you forget to charge them.
The blue yeti microphone is the best choice for podcasting, online gaming, podcasting, YouTube and live streaming on twitch. Being an audio engineer of 25 years, I have used many different microphones by different brands, from Shure to Sennheiser.
If you want phenomenal sound quality, any of the microphones by Blue are definitely worth checking out. I use the blue yeti microphone for my podcast, in my recording studio for twitch live streaming and my YouTube channels. Many online gamers and twitch streamers use the blue yeti microphone, as it has become the go-to mic for thousands.
Musicians use the blue yeti for recording music in their home. Since the yeti uses a usb connection, it’s a simple plug and play microphone that works for both windows and mac.
The Yeti uses Blue Microphone’s proprietary tri-capsule technology to produce pristine, studio-quality recordings that are powerful, crisp and warm.
The Blue Yeti features four different pattern settings for recording vocals, instrumental music, podcasts, or interviews in ways that would normally require multiple microphones. With simple controls for headphone volume, pattern selection, instant mute, and microphone gain, you’ll be creating exceptional recordings right out of the box.
The Blue yeti is equipped with a gain control to limit the level of sound coming into it, along with a headphone jack, volume control and multiple pattern selection such as cardioid, bidirectional, omni directional and stereo. There is a mute button, which comes in handy if you need to cough during a live stream. I have used the blue yeti for vocals, musical instruments, podcasting, skype interviews, field recordings, conference calls and recording narration for my YouTube channels. The blue yeti adds warmth and fullness to your voice. It sounds very natural and I highly recommend it.
The other mic by blue to consider is the snowball ice condenser mic. This microphone is also widely used and on the lower end of the price range. It lacks some of the features by the blue yeti such as gain control (cannot control the audio level coming into the mic) and audio recording patterns. The snowball microphone is great, but for a little more money, it’s worth upgrading to the Blue Yeti microphone for its features.
I keep one blue yeti in my recording studio for fast voice over work for clients and a second in the room I do live streaming for YouTube and twitch. A very simple setup for YouTube would be a Logitech pro video conference camera and this Blue Yeti microphone.
All microphones by blue are outstanding and I recommend them highly. One of the pro vocalists I work with closely uses blue microphones in his studio exclusively.
5 ways to make money fast by cutting expenses you don’t need.
GET RID OF CABLE TV
Cutting the cord and getting rid of cable tv is easy since there are many cable tv alternatives. Cable tv is becoming more of a dinosaur with each passing year. Cutting expenses can be difficult but sometimes the easiest answers are right under your nose. I cut cable tv expenses by getting rid of cable and will never have it again. I kept the internet for streaming and surfing the web. You will need internet access for what I discuss in this post.
Unfortunately, we get caught up in paying for things we don’t need. Just like keeping things in boxes in the basement…you may need them some day so you don’t throw anything out. Most people think we still need house phones. Just because you were raised with it doesn’t mean you need it.
I have a tight budget and am always looking for ways to save and make money. The house phone went away in 2002! I thought, “why am I paying for a house phone when everyone calls me on my cell phone?” Although the answer was clear, it was difficult for me to cut the house phone, ridding my life of something that I “always had.”
GET RID OF YOUR HOUSE PHONE
Honestly ask yourself, “am I using this?” Do you really use it? $45 a month for what?
Let’s get to the big one, getting rid of cable tv service. I thought about this for over a year. I was afraid to make the change because I’ve had cable since I was a kid. Everyone has cable tv, you need cable tv….uhhh no you don’t. Comcast charges an average of $150 for you to channel surf. REALLY?!
All you need is internet access to enjoy movies and tv from YouTube, HULU, NETFLIX, Amazon fire stick, etc. Cable tv offers nothing more than an added expense of $100-$200 a month to channel surf. What a waste of your time and money. GOTTA HAVE ALL THE CHANNELS! No you DON’T! Most people don’t even watch cable tv but refuse to let it go.
How to save money by getting rid of what you don’t need
If you got rid of your house phone, let’s say $50, and cable tv, that’s $150 or so. This would save you $200 a month or more. It’s not like you’re cutting yourself off from civilization and living in a log cabin. We’re talking about something you pay lots of money for that you aren’t using.
I got rid of cable tv in 2015 and haven’t been affected at all. I bought a MOHU house antenna that gives phenomenal picture quality and is highly recommended by thousands on Amazon. Check them out. MOHU also sells small tv antennas that resemble a mouse pad, which can be stuck on the wall or hidden. I bought the whole house antenna and couldn’t be happier. 100 mile range of pure HD tv channels for local networks.
GET A HOUSE ANTENNA FOR TV AND GET TRUE HD PICTURE
Here’s a video I made on the simple MOHU house antenna install
Now that we have internet only, I upped the internet package to give us a bit more speed. I pay about $15 more a month for faster internet speed, but still saving $120 because cable tv is gone.
But what about tv commercials? So what. I was raised on watching live tv and commercials give me a chance to get something from the kitchen. They’re not a big deal and I actually don’t mind them. We use the house antenna for live to and apple tv for movies and other programming via HULU. With Hulu, you can pay a little more a month for commercial free and also live tv viewing.
GET THE AMAZON FIRE STICK
Another option is the Amazon fire stick. This is a GREAT product, which is very inexpensive, that connects to an HDMI port on your tv. It delivers HD streaming of movies and shows. There is no monthly fee to use the fire stick. It connects to Alexa so you can control your tv via voice. No remote is required to control your tv, although it comes with one. The nice thing about the Fire stick is, you can take it with you and plug it in to a friend’s tv or any tv with an HDMI port, as long as there is internet for it to connect to. You need an internet wifi connection to stream content. I have the firestick as well.
Who needs cable tv?! Save your money, get a fire stick, and get unlimited viewing of movies and shows.
If you watch sports, there are plenty of options. ESPN has their own app you can stream for $10 a month via Amazon fire stick or apple tv.
GET RID OF YOUR CELL PHONE BILL
Yes, I know getting rid of your cell phone is crazy talk. I don’t mean physically get rid of it. Keep it but cancel service. You can still use your iphone as an ipad. There is wifi wherever you go. I have wifi service at work and at home. For phone calls I can get a Skype phone number for $20 a year. $20 A YEAR!
The downside to not having cell service is if you’re outside of wifi such as in the car and you need to make a call or get directions. For these situations you could get a cheap pay as you go phone for phone calls only.
Getting rid of my cell service is my next plan, as I can save an additional $100 a month! I’m paying AT&T $50 for a data plan I barely use since I’m ALWAYS IN WIFI! Think about it.
If you get lost in the car and need that GPS, get a GARMIN unit for the car. NO MONTHLY FEE to use and they work great!
What do you do for tv and movies after cutting the cord? Let us know.
In this post you will read about the top 5 cameras for YouTube videos and vlogging. The quality of these cameras is outstanding in both photography and video work for social media sites. What is the best video camera or camcorder for filming HD YouTube videos? If you’re vlogging, making skits or video clips, read on…
The best vlogging cameras are made by Canon, Sony and Panasonic. Although DSLR cameras are great at shooting both photos and video, the more compact cameras have surpassed them in many ways. DSLR cameras, which are the traditional professional cameras, will overheat when shooting 15 minutes or more of video. They are not really meant for video work, although they do an outstanding job of it. DSLR cameras are geared more towards the pro photographer and video creator.
For an excellent pro camera that takes outstanding video and photos, read on.
Most of you reading this already know what a vlog is. For those who don’t, let me explain. A vlog is a video blog. Think of it as a video diary. You sit in front of a camera, talk about a product, your life, etc. and upload it to your YouTube channel or blog. What’s a blog? You’re reading one right now. Bloggers write online about their lives, fashion tips, wedding tips, camera tips, movie reviews, etc. A blog is an online article. It’s more appealing to have photos and videos on blogs and that’s where a good camera comes in.
You can use your iPhone for video content on YouTube, Vimeo or a blog but if you want many more features, you need a better camera.
Canon and Sony have been the two largest names when it comes to vlogging cameras. I have been a Canon user for years and love them. The only other brand of camera I use is Panasonic. I have the Panasonic GX85 and LOVE IT! The quality is phenominal with very little to no video noise.
Here’s my review on my Panasonic GX85
Here are a few of my favorite cameras for vlogging, YouTube creation and out in the street video and photography. These cameras are used by some of the largest YouTubers and bloggers and are HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
WHAT TO LOOK FOR WHEN BUYING A CAMERA FOR VLOGGING OR YOUTUBE
Price. If you can’t afford it, keep looking. Don’t break the bank. Although these cameras are VERY NICE, the camera doesn’t make the art or story, that’s up to you.
Check out YouTube for tutorials and reviews and see how the features work.
Can you afford the accessories required for the type of video work you want to do, such as extra lenses?
Does the camera have a pop out mini tv viewer? This is important to bloggers and YouTube creators. If you’re sitting in front of the camera or holding it in front of you, how will you know if you’re in the shot if the screen is on the back of the camera only?
If you are looking for the best Vlogging camera that will help your Youtube or Video Blog for coming years then Canon G7x is hands down the best vlogging camera you can get right now. It is currently being used by top line vloggers and Youtubers such as FunForLouis and Casey Neistat. A high signal-to-noise ratio delivers minimal noise and distortion with breathtaking dynamic range, particularly notable in bright areas. And photography enthusiasts will appreciate the changes in image processing for the PowerShot G7 X, which include target exposure value and contrast characteristics for highlights. Dynamic range in bright areas is expanded with gradation attributes that are similar to EOS. Also, by changing the exposure index standard from SOS to REI, it is possible to shoot at almost the same brightness with the same Av, Tv, and ISO settings as EOS.

So you got a new iPad? And you spent money on the ipad pro? GREAT! Me too. I love apple products and the ipad is one of my favorite tools for working on my blog or filming and editing video on the go for my YouTube channels (using imovie as a video editor.)
I’ve never been a fan of the cheap covers that are magnetized to the iPad. Those are not protection, they’re just a simple leather lid that folds into a stand. If you drop your ipad, you’re done. Check this cool protection case I found, WITH A BUILT IN KEYBOARD! The keyboard for me was a huge sell since I’m more at home on a keyboard, old school.
I love the keyboard feel and finish. The stand is very sturdy and protects the iPad when folded up. The best part is, it’s only $35. To include a keyboard for $35 with this sturdy protective case is crazy. I wanted to pass this on to all you other bloggers or users of ipad pro.
Here’s where I got mine, on Amazon, as with everything I use:

I love writing about tech, photography and video production. I have been involved in each for about 25 years. If you like tech stuff and also provocative thoughts, subscribe to my blog. I do the research on cool gear for you.
Here are a few ways to fix your slow laptop or computer. With new computer software and applications being released as often as they are, your computer needs to keep up. Many of us can’t afford a new computer every couple of years. Computer speed is very important, whether you’re watching YouTube or working on your blog. In the 25 years I’ve been working in the tech support industry, it’s still amazing to me how technology has progressed.
HERE ARE SOME TIPS to speed up your computer:
Moving from a traditional spinning hard drive to a solid-state drive (SSD) is the best thing you can do to revive an older computer. Older hard drives are limited in speed because they locate data on the disc via a spinning platter, much like a vinyl record or CD. The disc must spin to locate the data. That takes time. This is why an SSD (solid state hard drive) is inherently faster than a mechanical spinning drive.
Make sure you’re not running out of space. Just because you have a 512GB hard drive doesn’t mean you can fill it entirely. The computer needs at least 1/4 of total hard drive space available at all times in order to run smoothly. If you are getting close to passing this, it’s recommended to either purchase a new drive entirely or get an external usb drive to store data on. I love external drives. I keep one for all my photos and one for videos I create. Being a professional photographer, I would never store all the thousands of photos on my main drive. I have 2 external usb drives; one to work with and one for backup in case a drive fails.
Upgrade your computer’s memory. This is known as RAM. It’s recommended to have at least 8GB RAM. My iMac has been upgraded to 32GB because of the video editing and audio mixing and mastering I do. Each computer is different so it’s important to get the correct memory. Check make and model for proper specs.
The single most important thing you can do for speed:
GET THAT SOLID STATE HARD DRIVE!
Replacing your spinning hard drive technology with a solid state hard drive is a quick and relatively inexpensive fix (compared to buying a new machine.) A new hard drive will breathe tons speed into your computer or laptop, even if it’s an 8-year-old Macbook pro like mine. There are tons of YouTube videos that walk you through the easy process of replacing a hard drive. I don’t recommend Geek Squad. Most of them are amateurs and have no idea what they’re doing.
HERE’S A VIDEO SHOWING HOW TO UPGRADE YOUR HARD DRIVE
Replacing your old hard drive with a solid state hard drive will make the largest impact in the speed of your computer. I highly recommend it.
Most laptops and computers before 2014 do not use solid state drives. They were using the old standard spinning drives with sata connections. IDE connections are worse and much slower in desktop computers. IF your desktop computer uses IDE cable (thin wide grey cable that connects to the hard drive) then I would recommend purchasing an entirely new computer altogether. Old school hard drives actually spin. The data is written to a metal platter, much like a vinyl record has grooves in it. The data is only accessed as fast as the drive can spin to retrieve the data. This is one reason spinning drives are bad. If the motor on an older spinning hard drives fails, you will lose all your data.
NERD TALK ALERT!
There were 2 main speeds hard drives ran at: 5400 rpm and 7200rpm. 7200 revolutions per minute sounds fast, and it is, but not when data is involved. By removing your hard drive and replacing with a solid state drive, you will see a night and day difference in the speed of your computer. It’s relatively easy to replace a hard drive, but as with anything, remember the order you took things apart.
A solid state hard drive has no moving parts and no spinning disc. This is solid state hard drives are so much better than the old traditional spinning drives. Your Iphone, smart phones and tablets such as the iPad use solid state hard drives. It’s instant access to your data. Since there are no moving parts, there is no heat generated, which is a great thing. I cannot recommend solid state hard drives enough. I have installed solid state hard drives in all my computers, as well as for for friends and coworkers.
I was much more willing to purchase the $150 hard drive instead of spending $1500 on a new Macbook. I recommend the brand Samsung, as they are the go-to for many, and a name you can trust. There are different storage sizes of hard drive and each come with a price. I would recommend 512GB for a great all around storage drive. This is plenty for your operating system, leaving plenty of space for music and videos. You can also save some money and go with a 128GB drive, then purchase a separate usb external drive to save your data to. 128GB just isn’t enough to save everything and you will run out of space fast. For the small price difference, it’s best to go with the 512GB.

You may have heard about reversing NET NEUTRALITY. THIS IS BAD.
NET NEUTRALITY allows you to surf ANYWHERE on the internet. Net Neutrality prevents internet providers from restricting access to sites we surf everyday.
Reversing net neutrality rules could cost more to binge your favorite shows
on Netflix or Hulu, to play video games, send messages on social media, and surf the web. People with wallets fat enough for the price hike will enjoy
higher speeds, but lower income browsers will get only a limited view of what
was once an open internet. It will hurt small businesses too, as they may not
be found if their customers can’t find them.
Want to view facebook? You’ll have to pay for that package.
Want to view YouTube? You’ll have to pay for that package.
etc etc etc.

Apple has been accused of significantly slowing down older models through updates in order to force users to upgrade to the next iPhone.
When September rolls around you know Apple will release a new iPhone. I love Apple and hate Microsoft. I have been in the tech field for 25 years and ditched microsoft for good in 2009. I use all Apple in my studio. Although I love Apple, I will not wait in line to purchase the newest and shiniest Apple iPhone. There are reasons for this. I don’t have money to buy a new iphone every year and nor do I want or need one. Second, it’s too trendy and I don’t care what anyone else does. There are also no features I need with a new release, as Apple rarely comes out with anything new that’s groundbreaking and needed by me. If it’s not broken then why should I fix it? I resigned myself to only buy something when I need something and spending $800 every year on an iphone is not that.
I keep my iPhones one and two versions back. The iPhone 8 was announced this week and I’m still very happy with my iphone 6. I would have kept my iphone 5s but since my eyes are getting older, the iphone 6 plus works really well for me with the large screen. So there is one great reason for my upgrade.
Coincidentally, a few months ago, my iPhone didn’t respond when I touched the screen. Only a reboot or complete shutdown resolved the issue until the next time. The phone then started to freeze and think about what I had just pressed. I wiped the iphone and started from scratch twice, which did nothing.
Two weeks before the iPhone 8 was announced, my iPhone’s battery started to deplete rapidly regardless of charging technique. I let the battery go to 0% and die off before charging to 100% to refresh the battery and the same thing happened. Regardless of charging cord used, the iphone would charge sporadically. This morning the battery went from 21% to 19% to dead before I got off the elevator.
Coincidence the week of the iPhone 8 release? This happens every year and I deal with it. I am not the only one complaining about this issue. Think about it. What is Apple’s biggest selling product? The IPhone. Without yearly Iphone sales, Apple wouldn’t make the millions (or more) they do every month. Without force breaking our phones with corrupt updates, causing our iPhones to run slow, fail, have bad connection, etc, most people wouldn’t buy their product.
I refuse to buy a new iPhone just because it’s launched. Apple relies on their new shiny product line to make insane money off each of us. Think about this. When the iphone 4 was released, how much was it? A LOT. A few years later AT&T was selling it for $49. $49 from $499 or $599 a few years prior?! Are they still making a profit on that $49? I’m sure they are. Their products are also said to be shoddy by techs, as Apple wants us to think they use the best and only the best, which is not the case.
Like clockwork, Apple has released a new iPhone once yearly since it first unveiled the flagship smartphone in 2007. The product cycle is so fast, rumours about the iPhone 8 began circulating the web even before Apple had unveiled the new iPhone 7. People are tripping over each other to get the new shiny item they don’t need.
Apple is constantly under fire for engaging in a marketing practice known as “planned obsolescence” – a method of making products with shorter lifespans, or making current generation products seem obsolete in order to sell a “new and improved” version.
It started with the 1923 Chevrolet. The car itself featured a new exterior and flashy cosmetic features, but the framework and mechanics were exactly the same as the cars GM had been producing for years. Adding the model year to the name made the product seem desirable and new, despite the lack of changes.
But the entire tech industry – not just Apple – is often accused of using planned obsolescence thanks to consumer demand for things like smartphones and laptops.
“As business became our dominate paradigm, we’ve adapted to this idea that change and innovation is the most important thing in the world,” Joanne McNeish, associate professor of marketing at Ryerson’s Ted Rogers School of Management, told Global News.
The tech industry has operated unregulated, for the most part, so they set their own rules and businesses usually set rules that are advantageous to them. The smart phone market in particular tends to drive planned obsolescence because the market is so competitive.
Apple’s brand persona is very arrogant – it attracts people’s attention.
“It’s something they are renowned for and it comes from a place in their brand where they say, ‘This is what’s best for you.’”
But, if the SumOfUs petition is any indication, a growing number of consumers seem to have had enough with Apple telling them what’s best.
A smart phone that keeps consumers satisfied for five years doesn’t exist
“We’ve entered a world where having the latest, most capable phone in our pockets is something that’s expected – it’s not a luxury,” said Neil Bearse, director of marketing at Queen’s University’s Smith School of Business.
It certainly feels like Apple isn’t coming up with mind-blowing breakthroughs lately. There’s a big difference between lusting after tech that really seems better and feeling like you’re being forced to “upgrade” to something that’s just slightly better.
I realize it’s not every year Apple is going to come out with some mind-blowing technology such as time travel or hologram display. That’s perfectly fine, although many people expect massive mind-blowing change. Regardless of the change, don’t force us to purchase something we don’t need or can’t afford by sabotaging our current perfectly good iPhones.
I never thought I’d say this but the iPhone 7 will be my last iphone. I plan on ditching my cell phone altogether and using this iphone 7 under wi-fi for email, surfing the web and Skype phone calls. I’ll get a skype phone number for use when I’m in wifi. I’m always in wifi. The only issue is when I’m in the car or somewhere with no wifi and can’t make calls. For that I may get a really cheap pay as you go phone, since I rarely use the phone anyway.
I canceled cable tv 2 years ago and haven’t had a house phone in 20 years. Losing my cell phone won’t be a problem at all. One less bill and no loss. I’m not brainwashed and don’t need what they make us think we need.
A little something for the millennial and younger. Do you remember what it was like before cell phones? Probably not. It was 1995 and no one had cell phones unless they had money. These were called car phones, which were cell phones, and permanently mounted in the car. Then there were pagers with answering machines and caller id.
What’s caller id? Man, you are young, and you really missed out on a lot of cool things in life. For one, when bands toured, they toured the WORLD FOR MONTHS! None of this little 40 city stuff and making albums out of their home on a Macbook for submitting on iTunes. Don’t get me wrong, that’s cool and I have done it too.
I digress. Let’s get back to phones. Everyone had a house phone back then. Some people still have house phones but never use them. Not sure why you’re still spending that money on something you never use. You never knew who was calling until you got caller id. The phone company charged $1.99 a month for caller id. This little box connected between your phone line in the wall and your phone. Phone calls came in, the box registered the data, and let you know not only the number, but the name of the caller. This was high technology. This device crippled crank phone calls.
You must know what crank phone calls are? Jerk kids would pick a number at random, or one they knew, call it, and do silly things or try to scare the person on the other end. There was no way of telling who it was. Sure, you could dial #69 to call that person back, which did no help really, since there was no way of knowing who it was or what number they called from. There was also #67, which allowed you to dial the last number you called without dialing the numbers again.
Ah, being an 80s kid. WE LOVED IT! You might be shocked to think, “how did you live without the internet or ipads or cell phones or candy crush?!” It was easy. Things were more fun and real back then. Concerts, live bands, we were in bands, we were outside playing baseball, seeing movies, the list was never-ending. Atari 2600 was huge for everyone. Ah, the better days.
I still haven’t played candy crush and never will. By the way, when I get home, my cell phone is on the counter. I’m not into social media much unless I’m publishing my photographs.
I’m an 80s kid. It feels like so long ago. We all can’t believe how fast time flies. Millennials today really are missing out. I know everyone says that, but we did really have an awesome childhood.
I recently took a ride with my 9-year-old son on a yellow school bus while visiting a zoo recently. It’s been 25 years roughly since I rode one of these. I’m too lazy to do the math on how many years so let’s say 25, as it sounds about right. The site of the green firm seats and awkward tire hump some kids were forced to sit over, brought back fond memories. I felt like a kid again. Thoughts rushed through my head in matter of seconds. I remembered how I put my backpack down to the floor, racing to get my Sony Walkman out to listen to Van Halen (David Lee Roth not Sammy Hagar) or any one of the other bands I was into. Back then we had cassette tapes. Mp3 didn’t come out until the early 1990s and when they did, it was revolutionary. We had vinyl records and cassette tapes only.
I carried no more than 5 cassettes on me, swapping them out each week. Today you can have thousands of songs with you always. You kids are spoiled.
As most people would say, “my generation was better.” I would have to say ours was one of the best. Kids growing up in the 1980s saw the birth of so many things. Granted, other generations have that statement, but ours was the largest in technology.
Here’s a small list of things we saw come to life in the 1980s:
Cable tv. Before cable, I remember watching live tv with my family, especially saturday nights, which was pizza night. By the way, I canceled cable 2 years ago so we are back to watching live tv and using HULU. Couldn’t be happier.
Arcade games. We played PONG on an old black and white tv in the late 70s at the age of 7. It was magical. We were there when pac man and space invaders started the video gaming revolution. It was simply awesome to witness the birth of video games. We literally had no games of any kind. Atari 2600, colecovision and Intellivision. There was an arcade close to home called STAR WORLD. During the summer on Wednesdays from noon until 1pm, you could play all the video games you wanted for $1. It was normally 25 cents a game…quarters not tokens.
Movies were better. I’m not a fan of CG or computer animation. I know it’s art but it was more impressive to create models and film on live sets to me. Don’t get me wrong, computers are great, but I prefer old school effects, as they aren’t sterile.
Music stores. You knew from friends and magazines when your favorite band was releasing their album. There was no internet. We counted the days to visit the record store, and even wait in line, for that album. It was magical. Now we just click and download from our homes. Sad really. I started buying vinyl records, then cassettes, then CDs in the 1980s. I never thought I would adopt iTunes in the beginning.
I started photography as a kid and shot on FILM. After 36 exposures, I had to PAY to get them developed at the grocery store. Now kids are photographing endless digital pics and posting to social media instantly for the world to see. Back then, Only local family and friends could see my work. If I wanted anyone else to see my photos, I would need to pay for copies to be made and snail mail it to them.
If you loved video production, as I did, you were stuck filming on a large VHS camera with no editing capabilities. Again, only friends and family could see what you shot. Now, everyone has access to digital cameras and social media. You Tube was born in 2005 and is now the 2nd largest platform next to google. It’s easy now.
Cell phones. There were no cell phones unless you were a doctor or someone with money. They were called car phones and attached to the inside of a car. If you had a car phone, you had money or were important.
TV. If you were playing outside in the snow and missed the Charlie Brown Christmas special, you had to wait until next year. This made it more special. There was no YouTube or DVR or anything to record it on. It was on live tv with commercials and that’s all you had. It was special.
Radio was much better. Your favorite band relied on radio to sell albums and promote tours. There was no Spotify or internet or anything to get music from. You bought albums and waited in line for tickets at Ticketmaster for a concert. The closer the concert got to your town, the more commercials you would hear, hyping it up all the more.
TV was of better quality. There wasn’t all this killing and zombie slayer BS. I’m a guy and I can’t watch it. It doesn’t appeal to me. Storylines and movies were better than they are now.
Book stores. I got most of my books from BDalton. I miss walking into the store as a kid, taking in the smell of fresh books all over the store, and looking for the perfect one.
The ditto machine in grammar school. Remember the smell? Loved it.
Smelly stickers and sticker books.
Mtv – When it was cool and real and only music. – thanks Gwen!
We’d stay outside until the street lights came on.
I know it sounds like life was more limiting back then and you’re right. That’s what made it better. That’s what made people more social. Back in the 80s, kids and people talked more. They hung out more. I work downtown and everywhere I go, people are buried in their phones. On the train, crossing the street, in their cars, in waiting rooms, at restaurants, all buried in their phones. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a tech geek, but I’m just not attached to my phone. I use technology as a tool, not a crutch. I rarely look at it.
Speaking of awesome stuff as a kid, I was there for Star Wars EP 4 on opening day, along with 4 and 6. Star Wars was amazing. It was new. It was inspirational. I can’t say that about today. Star Wars doesn’t have the magic it once did, as it’s more watered down, if you will. Sure, it’s still great, but not to me.
I’m not sure what dictates cool in high schools of today but for us it was hanging out with friends. The colder months were the best, as we got together around fire pits in someone’s backyard while wearing our flannels and leather jackets. If you were in a band, you had a cool leather jacket. Those are some of my favorite memories. Girls in highschool often smoked cigarettes and wore leather and tight jeans. The smell of aqua net hairspray, leather and light cigarette smoke, is one of my favorites to this day. Come to think of it, a lot of the guys did the same thing, minus the aqua net. I take that back. Guys wanting to be in glam bands (ugh) wore the aqua net. Metal dudes did not. Metal dudes, by the way, were always very cool to everyone. They got a bad rep.
A good cup of coffee, a good flannel, and a great October day are what I loved most, and still do.
No era beats the 80s. The 1950s were also very awesome, although I wasn’t alive back then.
What are some of your favorite memories from the 80s?
If you want my opinion, you should cancel cable tv. I cancelled cable in 2015 and wouldn’t take it back if you paid me to use it. I am not much of a television watcher, but even if I was, there is absolutely no loss. Trust me on this.
What made me extra made was calling comcast (one of the cable companies we had) to get a clueless rep. I’m a tech and wound up solving most of the issues on my own…some things that should not take 3 visits (when they actually show up.) This one issue took 3 different comcast techs to come out and they had no clue why certain channels weren’t coming in. The 4th tech informed me he was actually a tech, while the 3 others were general contractors wearing comcast shirts, who were clueless. It was a simple fix, and one I resolved on my own. The 4th guy just confirmed that I fixed it. I saw paying comcast as a source of misery. Over priced misery that I didn’t need.
How I got rid of cable tv – MOHU house antenna setup – sky antenna cable tv alternatives
I’m always thinking of ways to save money, being that we’re on one income only with a family of four. I am doing something I never thought I would be able to do…buy everything! I’m so lucky and blessed to have the job that I have to provide for our family. It’s not easy at all, which is why some things, such as cable, had to go.
The final monthly cable bill of roughly $100 came in the mail on a Saturday 3 years ago. I had it. I let my wife know the day will be coming but didn’t know when. I had purchased a house antenna from Amazon that got rave reviews from hundreds of people. They were right. Let me tell you something about HD tv. There is no such thing as HD tv with cable companies. HD is a resolution of 1080, as you may have heard. Cable companies broadcast in a resolution of 720. It looks good but it isn’t real HD. It’s a compressed signal so they save on their bandwidth. Remember, their cable lines are carry data signals for everyone in your neighborhood, from emails to streaming online, to cable tv, to phone calls. If everyone had pure HD tv it would be slower or even more expensive. A house antenna is PURE HD. Signals over the air like old school tv, are pure HD and they’re FREE! The picture looks amazingly crisp. Way better than any cable company can provide. My MOHU SKY 60 TV antenna gets channels from 60 miles away. Since Chicago is 40 miles, there is no issue.
Don’t you miss your DVR?
Nope, because I have HULU, which is awesome. We use HULU for streaming HD movies and shows to our tv via apple tv. We watch America’s Got Talent. If we don’t watch it live, we will watch it the next day on HULU anytime we want. The shows are always there, unlike with a DVR, where you have to record the shows to the DVR then fight with your spouse when they erase your shows!
We also rent movies or stream. Being that I’m huge into You Tube, that’s what I will mainly watch, along with the kids. This is the way of the future. Cable companies will fall and I can’t wait. They had their chance and blew it. Rates are at an all time high, when, in fact, they should have been dropping! Cable has been around since the early 1980s and rates are increasing! Our $100 a month cable bill was basic channels and one DVR only. Not even sports channels! FOR WHAT? I don’t watch sports, but still!
By the way, if you want sports, ESPN and even HBO and larger companies have a monthly plan for $9.95 a month? Something like that. You can buy a monthly from them to watch their shows. You don’t need a cable company.
I pay for internet access and HULU only. I save $100 a month by having no cable bill. We tried Netflix and hated it. The movies were old with not much variety. Hulu is the winner for current tv and movies. Other than that we rent movies from the library for free or spend $1 at Red Box. A couple of friends pay $180 a month for cable tv….to channel surf! CRAZY!
I also haven’t had a house phone since 1999. I told everyone I knew to cancel their house phone…we all use our cell phones anyway. I heard the same story, no I couldn’t do that! You need a house phone. For what? We grew up with one, that doesn’t mean we still need it. Sure, you may need it for some things, like older people living with you or a home security system, but overall, it’s not needed. Home security systems are best with wi-fi anyway. There are no phone lines for robbers to cut. If they do that, your alarm system can’t call the police. Think about that.
