ipad pro 10.5 or 12.9 review for photo and video editing

This post is for those looking at either the iPad pro 10.5 inch or 12.9 inch model. More than likely you already know the specs of both ipad pro models and are just looking for advice on which one to buy, based on size. Specs for each can be found for each at the bottom of this post.

I was in the same boat, looking for either an iPad pro 10.5 inch or 12.9 inch just a couple of weeks ago, summer 2018.

For most of my work I use my trusty 15″ i5 Macbook pro from 2010 with solid state hard drive by Samsung. If you’re computer or mac is running slow, I can’t recommend installing a solid state drive (SSD) enough.

For a lot of my YouTube video production I will film and edit on my iPhone using iMovie. For more advanced edits for clients or green screen work I will edit on my 2011 iMac 27″ i7 using final cut X.

As I started working on a few more YouTube channels, mobility was more important to me. I needed and wanted something more than the size of an iPhone screen.

Research shows that more people are using iPads for editing photos and video now more than ever. Since I really only use the Macbook pro for researching online and YouTube watching, it seemed to me I could get more done faster and easier with an iPad pro model. I WAS RIGHT.

The technology in an iPad pro is much faster in every way, even when going against my 2011 27″ iMac with 32GB ram for rendering and exporting movies, by at least 50%.

ipad pro 10.5 or 12.9After long debate and many customer reviews later, I went with the 10.5″ iPad. Unfortunately I will not be able to help you with this. You should really check them out if you are unsure. I was almost going to order the 12.9″ since I will be using it for art and video editing most of the time. The larger the screen, the better, I thought.

Wanting to save some money, and seeing that most people were very happy with their 10.5″ ipad pro screen size, that is the route I took. I am very happy with it.

As you research, you will find that half the users love the screen size of the 12.9″ for what they do, while others really find the 10.5″ to be perfect. I find the 10.5″ to be perfect for me and I have used laptops and pc’s and iMacs of all shapes and sizes over the last 25 years.

for editing video I use LumaFusion and couldn’t be happier. It works just great on the ipad pro 10.5″ and has sped up my editing process tremendously.

If you are on the fence on whether or not to get an iPad pro I would say YES! These iPads are so much better than what you may have been used to just a couple of years ago with iPads. I can’t recommend them enough.

Now my workflow for most YouTube channels is to film with my iPhone and edit on my iPad pro 10.5″ Once editing is done I upload right to YouTube from the iPad pro.

If you have any questions or have chosen one over the other, let us know why.

  1. Great review/comparison. I am an artist as well and I am currently deciding which iPad Pro to get. Was leaning toward the 10.5” for all the reasons you mentioned, plus I travel a lot, and the 10.5” is so much more portable. But I am going to wait until the new iPad pros are announced this month. Rumor has it the bezels will be slimmer all around. The 10.5” will supposedly become an 11” screen but roughly stay the same physical size, while the 12.9” will stay with a 12.9” screen but the physical size of the iPad will become much smaller. I want to see if this will make the 12.9” more portable…or if the increased 10.5” to 11” iPad Pro will still be better for travel while getting a larger screen. Only a few more weeks to wait.

    1. i love the size of the 12.9 but it’s just a little too large in my opinion. i love the 10.5. perfect size for me, although there are times i could see using the 12.9…but i saved money and overall i’m happy. good luck.
