The Dark Tower movie review
I won’t ruin the movie with spoilers but will say I enjoyed this film a lot. A very strong story that’s easy to follow with great casting and acting. I’m not one for foreshadowing and can’t stand when films go that route. There was none of that here. Fans of the Stephen King book series, thousands of pages long, may not like it due to lack of details. Seriously though, you can’t cram all those pages into 90 minutes and you know this.
The story is your good against evil with a very ingenious story line. A demonic wizard vs. a gunslinger. This is original. It has a wild west feel without the horses. Jumping to different worlds via portals, it’s a race against time to save the universe. Sounds complex but it’s not. Again, the story is strong with just the right amount of special effects to support the story and not the other way around.
Although I’m heavily into special effects (when done right), I can’t stand CGI, especially when it’s overused. I prefer the old school method of model making and stop motion animation (Empire Strikes back AT AT scene and all of ep 4-6 for that matter.) Just the right amount of special effects to carry the power of the story. The movie just made sense with the right amount of details to tie everything up nicely. I have seen a lot of bad reviews on it. A lot of those were from fans who read the books. Again, there is a lot to cover and no way can that be done in 90 minutes. You do not need to read the books to understand the film. I can’t see any negative to this film at all, whether you read the books or not. The Dark Tower movie stands on its own very well.
If you’re looking for a good film it’s worth checking out.
