Dragonframe software is the best stop motion animation software. Hollywood studios and directors such as Tim Burton have used Dragonframe for their blockbuster films. Dragonframe has been used to make several full-length motion picture films, including Disney’s Frankenweenie and Laika’s Coraline, The Boxtrolls, and ParaNorman, as well as the stop motion television show Shaun the Sheep. It has also been used to shoot stop motion scenes in live action movies, including the holochess scene in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and numerous stop motion shorts. I am currently using stop motion studio pro on the iphone and it works perfect for smaller projects. My panasonic gx85 camera has a built in stop motion feature that works well and even includes onion skinning.
The panasonic gx85 with its built in stop motion animation feature and stop motion studio pro on iPhone app are great for smaller projects, although they are still very powerful. For more advanced film – like quality, Dragonframe is highly recommended.
For those of you not sure what stop motion is, it is the painstaking art of photographing still images in succession, to a computer. When put together, as with a flipbook, the characters will move. Just as with cartoons, each frame or drawing cell is put together to create movement. There are 24 frames or drawings per second, in film, so that means an artist had to draw 24 drawings for each second of a movie. Guess how many drawings were required for the average Disney film? Do the math. Actually, Disney used 30 frames per second so it’s more fluid. Walt Disney insisted on this back in the day.
Check out this stop motion animation I did with lego batman and the joker. Filmed with stop motion studio pro on iPhone7.
In the case of stop motion, a photograph is taking and the puppet, or object is moved a small fraction of a millimeter. After that move, another photo is taken, and so on. When all photos are played together, movement is created. The movie is edited, sound effects are added, along with titles, music and dialogue. It’s a lot of fun and a lot of work. Depending on the production it can take about an hour or more for 10 seconds of video.
Check out how Dennis Muren used stop motion animation to make the AT AT walkers walk in the Empire Strikes back.
The original king kong movie was filmed using stop motion, along with the AT AT walkers from the Empire strikes back. The AT AT walkers were only about 3′ tall but appeared to be monsters on the silver screen.
Dragonframe is a more advanced, pro stop motion animation software package. It is designed for high quality stop motion animation. Check out this video from Dragonframe.
Although I have great tools currently, I will be upgrading to dragonframe. Check out my stop motion animation and other projects on my you tube channel, ROTTER PHOTOGRAPHY.
